Essential Golf Tips

Improve your game with these fundamental techniques

Master Your Grip

The Foundation of Every Swing

  • Place your lead hand so the grip runs diagonally from palm to fingers
  • Your trail hand should complement the lead hand grip
  • Maintain consistent pressure (5-6 on a scale of 10)
  • Check that you can see 2-3 knuckles on your lead hand
Fundamental

Perfect Your Stance

Build a Solid Foundation

  • Feet shoulder-width apart for driver, narrower for irons
  • Weight balanced 50/50 on balls of your feet
  • Slight knee flex for athletic posture
  • Spine tilted away from target (for right-handers, spine tilts right)
Fundamental

Backswing Mechanics

Loading Power Efficiently

  • Start with a one-piece takeaway (arms, hands, club move together)
  • Rotate shoulders 90 degrees, hips 45 degrees
  • Keep lead arm relatively straight but not locked
  • Weight shifts to trail side (60/40 split)
Intermediate

Downswing Power

Generate Maximum Club Speed

  • Initiate with lower body (hips lead the downswing)
  • Create lag by maintaining wrist angle
  • Weight transfers to lead side (90/10 at impact)
  • Release club head through impact zone
Advanced

Impact Position

The Moment of Truth

  • Hands ahead of club head for irons
  • Hips open approximately 45 degrees to target
  • Head behind the ball
  • Weight fully shifted to lead side
Advanced

Follow Through

Complete Your Swing

  • Full rotation to balanced finish position
  • Chest facing target or slightly left of target
  • Weight entirely on lead foot (95/5)
  • Hold finish for 2-3 seconds to check balance
Fundamental

Short Game Mastery

Lower your scores with these short game fundamentals

Chipping Technique

  • Narrow stance, weight forward (60/40)
  • Ball position back of center
  • Hands ahead of ball at address and impact
  • Minimal wrist hinge, shoulder rotation

Pitching Fundamentals

  • Open stance slightly toward target
  • Weight favoring lead side
  • More wrist hinge than chipping
  • Accelerate through impact

Bunker Shots

  • Open clubface before gripping
  • Wide, open stance
  • Aim to hit 2 inches behind ball
  • Full, aggressive swing

Putting Essentials

  • Eyes directly over ball
  • Shoulders, arms, putter move as one
  • Smooth pendulum motion
  • Accelerate through impact

Effective Practice Drills

Structured exercises to accelerate your improvement

The Gate Drill

Beginner

Purpose: Improve putting accuracy and start line

Setup: Place two tees just wider than your putter on either side of the ball, creating a "gate"

Execution: Practice putting through the gate without touching either tee. Start with short putts and gradually increase distance.

Goal: 10 consecutive putts through the gate from 5 feet

Impact Bag Training

Intermediate

Purpose: Develop proper impact position and power transfer

Setup: Use an impact bag or heavy pillow. Take your setup position

Execution: Make slow-motion swings focusing on achieving proper impact position (hands ahead, weight forward, hip rotation)

Goal: 20 quality repetitions with correct positions

Towel Drill

Beginner

Purpose: Eliminate early extension and maintain posture

Setup: Place a towel under your armpits, holding it with both arms

Execution: Make practice swings keeping the towel secure throughout. Focus on body rotation rather than arm movement.

Goal: 15 swings without dropping the towel

Feet Together Drill

Intermediate

Purpose: Improve balance and rotation

Setup: Place feet together, ball in center

Execution: Make 50-75% speed swings maintaining balance. Focus on rotation and arm swing synchronization.

Goal: Hit 10 solid shots maintaining balance through finish
